Which wood can make a better speaker box, MDF or plywood?

MDF and plywood are two types of wood commonly used to make speaker boxes. Compared to plywood, MDF is denser, easier to work with, and cheaper. However, plywood tends to refract and reflect sound better than MDF. This results in better sound travel overall. In addition, plywood offers more portability and better resistance to bending and moisture.

The difference between MDF and plywood

1: Density

The density of the wood has a direct impact on the quality of the sound. The resonance, distortion or reflection of wood depends on the density of the boards. Too dense a board will kill the reflective properties of the sound. Likewise, less density will produce a more distorted sound. In terms of density, the uniform density of MDF wins. MDF provides much better audio clarity than plywood.

2: Weight

The weight of the wood affects the portability of the speaker box. Anything heavy should not be used for speakers intended to be carried around. Plywood is much lighter than MDF. It is much less dense and less structured. Therefore, speaker boxes made of plywood are also much lighter.

3: Moisture resistance

Moisture can change the wood panels and cause them to swell. This can affect the sound and overall life of the speaker. MDF tends to absorb water. It also has very low moisture resistance. In wet or humid environments, MDF swells easily. Plywood does not absorb water easily. Even if you spill water on it, it will not have much effect. High quality plywood will not swell easily due to moisture. No matter how humid the environment is, there is no need to worry.

4: Cost

MDF is cheaper, so technically MDF wins in this area. But for some buyers, the higher quality of the plywood is worth the higher price.

So if you want better sounding speakers, plywood is the better choice. It has better sound, is more portable, and lasts longer. But if you are on a budget, then MDF is a better choice.
